“They’re just pixels.”
My guild's other main tank — the warrior, not the druid — called me while I was driving to work on Friday morning.
"Ouchies was hacked," he announced. "The guild bank has been completely emptied." Pause. "Except for the glyphs. They didn't take the god damn glyphs."
I couldn't help it; I laughed.
"The enchanting mats, the BoE's, the gems ... all gone," Coffer continued, sounding bleak. (I know Amber trademarked 'Cranky Tank,' and I won't infringe. But every guild has one, and Coffer is ours.)
... Did I mention it's a gorgeous autumn in Arizona? It was a cool 80-something degrees and I was cruising up the 101 North with my convertible top down and the Goo Goo Dolls on the radio. (If you see a girl in a red Mustang with LOLRET plates, Pix, /wave!)
"Don't worry about it," I told him, enjoying the drive too much to fret myself. "They're just pixels."
Besides, I'm sure a GM will restore whatever was taken. It's Ouchies I feel sorry for, since he's going to have to sort through two guild banks' worth of mail in about two weeks.
Hopefully, whoever took temporary control of his account left him some gear to do it in. Undead female orcs are not particularly attractive naked.

Only one?
I’m pretty sure ours has more than one! Although Josh is the only one officially dubbed Cranky Tank in his guild notes, last night we had an alt tank tell the boomkin that if he pulled aggro again he wasn’t trying to get it back. XD
I think anyone who has tanked for awhile is a bit, shall we say, testy at times…some of us just adopt it as a perpetual state.

Ow, hopefully nobody has an urgent need for the things in the guild bank between now and whenever your officer’s ticket gets answered…
They are only pixels, but it’s still a pain to have to go through the process of getting them all back.
Good luck with the recovery effort.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt I didn’t really want – TWICE. <$7 for an authenticator is the best money one can spend on WoW. I encourage everyone to do it as a preventative measure, rather than reactive one after-the-fact.

If I get an iPhone, I’m going to end up getting the free one that’s offered through the app store. They added support for a bunch of phones, but I’m not going to justify getting a data plan for the phone I have for that app.

This is actually the second (and a half) time in two years that we’ve lost the guild bank because an officer was hacked. Keaton and I will probably both end up getting authenticators and limiting access to a few withdrawals each except to our accounts — which will annoy /everyone/ because we’re both horrible about responding to in-game mail as it is, but at least we know those fifteen hundred stacks of icy dragonscales will be protected. ^^

My bank is full of just random stuff anyway… I’m holding on to a few pieces of t2 loot that I got way back in the day and just all sorts of junk. If I got hacked, the farmer would take one look, log off, and mail me saying “u no have good stf. go frm.”

A previous guild with whom I was affiliated actually instituted /gkicks if you couldn’t secure your account (one-time forgiveness, then gone). Authenticators as a condition of membership? I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s already being done elsewhere.

My guess is folks like Ensidia have that as a policy. Who’s the guild in the States that has a similar rep for clearing content? I bet they do, too.

I think this hacking thing is catching. We just had two members hacked this past week, one of which was also an officer. Our problem wasn’t that the hacker left glyphs but that the GM returned absolutely nothing of value. Among Fish Feasts, multiple epic gems and enchanting materials, we got back some arrows and a Dawnstone!

That’s awful! I haven’t been online for a few days, but Keaton checked my in-game mail ever-so-briefly yesterday and said it’s awash with gbank mats — so *fingers crossed* at getting our valuables back.
I’m sorry you guys didn’t.

Wow, it’s a trend! I wonder how many other people have had gbanks hacked in the recent weeks. Good luck getting your stuff back! As Teresa mentioned, and as I blogged about, we have gotten all of our craptastic stuff back, but nothing worth much value or use.

Well, it was my turn last night. Good thing my guildies caught it before I got the guild bank. I got an email that my password changed this morning, and now… the fun process of getting things restored. I talked to one of the guildies this morning about it, after telling him to keep me at the lowest rank just in case, and he was surprised at how calm I was about it. I refrained from replying, “Ehh, it’s just pixels.”

I’m sorry that happened to you — even if they are just pixels.
If it helps, everything was restored within a day or two. Blizzard has gotten faster with the restores … but I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not, given that it probably means they’ve had a /lot/ of practice.
October 16th, 2009 - 10:03
That’s the thing I feel the most upset about. The work I’m making someone else do to fix my problem. I’ve already ordered an authenticator, but it doesn’t take away that someone has to spend their work day cleaning up my mess.

October 16th, 2009 - 11:30
Fair enough. I’m just glad it’s over. Well, aside from the in game mail that will have a bunch of shit that I may not have actually had… depends on how they do their restores.
