Surreality is recruiting!

Blood Elf and Badass: Not Mutually ExclusiveSurreality is a progression-minded adult raiding guild on the US-Black Dragonflight server.  In the past, our tagline has been “serious raiding on a casual schedule.”  However, we have recently come to realize that our core raiders tend more towards the serious and less towards the casual, and are hoping to attract a few like-minded players to round out our raiding roster.  Our 10-man team clears the Trial of the Grand Crusader every week.  Help us make it possible for our 25-man to do the same!

Raid Schedule and Progression

We raid 25-man content on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 9:30 PM to 12 midnight (Eastern Time).  We do not schedule 10-mans on Group Calendar, but do manage to run anywhere between three and four impromptu ToC 10 raids each week.

We’ve cleared Ulduar 25 through Yogg-Saron, with a handful of hard-modes complete (including Flame Leviathan +4, XT-Deconstructor, Hodir and Freya -1).  Trial of the Crusader 25 is on "farm status".  A full clear takes about an hour — leaving us far too much time each week not to be working on Trial of the Grand Crusader!

This is, of course, where you come in.

Our Wish List

Healers.  We are looking to add two healers to our raiding roster.  At the moment, our healing core includes a discipline priest, a holy priest, two restoration shamans and a holy paladin.  All five are very solid players with close to 100% attendance, so our ideal acquisitions would be a resto druid with a balance or feral off-spec and a holy paladin with a retribution off-spec.  Someone who likes to DPS as well as heal would likely have the opportunity to do both.

Tanks.  We make a point of promoting tanks from within, and are not recruiting tanks at this time. (That said, an arms warrior or feral cat who was willing to DPS in 25-mans would almost certainly find herself in demand as a 10-man tank.)

DPS.  When it comes to DPS, we’re far more concerned with the player than the class.  We are actively looking to recruit a mage, an arms warrior and a Death Knight of any spec.  (Believe it or not, we have exactly no DPS Death Knights in our 25-man raid!)   We do not currently have openings for retribution paladins, elemental shamans or shadow priests.

Guild Culture

Surreality is an adult guild.  This means that we do not accept members under the age of 18 except to our Friends & Family rank.  Our youngest raider is 19, and most of our members are in their mid-twenties to early thirties.

That said, yes, we are very much aware that age is not always (or even often) an indication of maturity, let alone intelligence or skill.  We all know a mature 14 year-old who can tank like nobody’s business and an immature 40 year-old who gemmed his priest for attack power and couldn’t heal a cockroach through Ragefire Chasm.  However, we do tend to be a raucous bunch and Vent chatter isn’t always appropriate for all ages.  We also prefer to raid with players who are in control of their own playtime — which most young people, appropriately, are not.

Of course, adult is not always synonymous with mature

We hold our members to a high standard of behavior (for example, trolling the realm forum or Trade chat channel on a guilded character is frowned upon), but behind the closed doors of our guildhall we can veer from perfectly respectable in one minute to wildly inappropriate in the next.

If you are considering applying from off-server, you are welcome to listen in on a raid or roll a low level alt to experience our guild culture firsthand before committing to a transfer.

What We Expect From You

  • Know your class and role.  Our officers are results oriented.  Although we do assign role leads who are available to offer advice or support, we won't attempt to micromanage your spec, your gear plan, your gems or your playstyle.  You are in command of your own performance.
  • Accept constructive criticism, when appropriate.  We won't micromanage you during raids, but we may question you privately if it seems like you're struggling with a particular encounter or whisper you during a raid with constructive criticism or advice.  Our intention isn't to call you out for your mistakes, but to initiate a mutually beneficial dialogue.  Please accept these efforts in the helpful spirit with which they were intended.
  • Commit to those raids you sign up for.  Real Life™ happens!  We know that.  We all miss raids from time to time.  But please, commit to those raids you signed up for and communicate with us when you can't.  This is "just a game," but 24 other people are counting on you just the same.
  • Be as excited to wipe for three hours each night as we are!  Care about achievements and hard-mode progression.  Don't be "that guy" — you know, the one who never misses a farm run but always seems to have something else to do when we flip the dungeon difficulty to heroic.  Not everyone is motivated by hard-mode achievements, but we are.  If you aren't, then we might not be the best guild for you.

What You Can Expect From Us

  • Stability.  Surreality celebrated its second birthday in August.  Many of our raiders have been guilded since early T5, and several played together on other servers or even in other games prior to our inception.  We have relatively low attrition and seldom lose established members to anything other than real life.
  • Transparency.  Officer chat is a largely social channel; most of the real discussion happens in /guild or on our forums.  Policy decisions are debated openly, with everyone welcome and encouraged to participate.
  • Fair and equitable loot distrubtion.  We use EPGP to distribute loot.  Anyone running the EPGPLootMaster mod can see the exact same interface our officers use to assign loot, as well as all incoming bids and any comments made.  We strive to make the entire process as open as possible.
  • Officers who care.  Really.  If you've been following me for any length of time, then you know how hard I try to be fair — to balance the needs of the many while still taking into account the wants of the few.  I'm not always successful, but it's never for a lack of trying.
  • Fun, friendship and a Really Good Time™!  We genuinely like and respect each other.  (... well, there is Malamo.)  Surreality started as a social guild with a "fun and friends first; progression second" philosophy, and while we are serious about progression, it will never come at the expense of our relationships, standards or values.

  1. Man if I was still playing WoW I would totally apply. /sad face
Hopefully you’ll be able to get some good people. :)

  2. As a retired member of this guild I fully encourage anyone considering this to join. Raiding with Surreality was easily the most fun i have had in my many years of WoWing. If RL hadn’t suddenly hit me like a ton of bricks i would still be raiding 3 nights a week with these guys and loving it. The fact that I still read my old guild leaders blog and occassionally jump on vent to chat must say something for the kind of atmosphere in the guild.

    • Aww, thanks Bob2.

At least you aren’t being a stranger! I distinctly remember Bob1 promising to visit (because he compared himself to herpes in the process, which was unique …), but — alas — he never does.

How’s vet school treating you? I caught a sliver of your conversation with Keaton last night while I was logging in and it sounds like a really exciting time. I miss you in game, of course, but I’m so happy that you’re living your dream. <3

  3. Vet school is awesome. However being the first year there is alot of ground work they have to teach us, anatomy, physiology, histology, immunology, and they can be boring and tedious, but in the back of my head I know that I am finally learning stuff that is going to be important to me. Plus there are also some amazing courses for example a 1 case a week group diagnostic course which I find incredibly fun.

I do miss the old progression raid nights though, but hey I may still be back someday.

P.S. Please /lick ignus for me, I have a feeling he isn’t getting licked nearly enough with me gone
